The Organisation

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) develops and delivers policies and programs and services that support and enhance the wellbeing of all Victorians.

It takes a broad view of the causes of ill health, the drivers of good health, the social and economic context in which people live, and the incidence and experience of vulnerability.

The Position

The DHHS is currently seeking to appoint a Deputy Chief Health Officer (CHO) - Environment to provide strategic clinical leadership and authoritative advice to support the CHO, Deputy Secretary, Secretary and staff in the Health Protection Branch.

Reporting to the CHO, the Deputy CHO will participate in emergency management activities, contribute to the coordination of the prevention and response to public health incidents, act as the media spokesperson as authorised by the CHO and represent the department on state and national committees.

The successful candidate will be a qualified medical practitioner, ideally with a postgraduate qualification in Public Health. With significant public sector experience, the appointee will be a proactive, strategic thinker who is able to balance science with the political landscape and community needs. Superior communication skills ensure credibility in all forms of media as the Deputy steps up to the role of CHO as required. Driving the reform agenda of modernising and strengthening health protection with a clear view to achieving identifiable outcomes, strong stakeholder and people management skills complement a proven ability to engage all audiences with authority and empathy. Supported by evidence based environmental scanning and decision-making, a passion for Public Health will drive the Deputy CHO to influence and enhance for the wellbeing of communities.
